Pre-training Principle:

This principle is a technique that prepares the learner for upcoming training or academic content by providing them an overview of specific words and key concepts relevant to the material. This information is important because as the student reads through material and/or observes demonstrations, the student's cognitive ability would be hindered through a lack of understanding if they did not understanding the verbiage or concepts. Pre-training reduces the stress and overload of information by allowing the student to gain a basic understanding without becoming overwhelmed. The best way to determine how much pre-training is needed is to provide the student with a pre-test. How much does the student already know (Clark & Mayer, 2011)?

When my team and I first started this project, we were a bit confused about what a Wiki was or was not--exactly. The above website leads to information "About Everything Wiki". The site welcomes you and asks you if you have questions because they have got answers. Wikis can harbor just about any information in the form of the written word, videos, pictures, and related links. This site was an excellent example of pre-training because it explained everything I needed to know so that I could move forward with my portion of the team project. What did I learn?

  • A Wiki is a collaborate effort that can be authored by a few to thousands of people who have the ability to create and edit information; this is why Wikepedia is not acceptable for academic referencing because it is not reliable.

  • The purpose of a Wiki is to share any information, which is why Wikis are not always suitable for children. Good to know in advance.

  • What makes Wikis unique is that anyone can view the information. Viewer or readers are called "Lurkers".

  • The "Everything Wiki Community":

    • Want to interact? Just read the posts or send a message to the moderator and be invited in to create and edit.

    • Finding answers to questions is easy in the community.

  • Wiki Awareness

    • Wikepedia is a Wiki--not an encyclopedia that has been edited by encyclopedists.

    • Wikisphere is the power of mankind in a networked world--the power of technology to increase the potential of mankind through the sharing of information; this can be church, family, tribe, city, county, state or country.

    • Wiki vs. Blog: A Wiki is created by many people sharing diverse knowledge, interests, topics, and more. A blog is created by one person or business and generally has a specific agenda.

    • Wikiedia: Common misspelling of Wikepedia so if you see this word you will know what it means.

    • Wikicrafts are uploaded images.

    • Wiki Photo Gallery is an album of pictures.
